03 March 2006
BNI News International - The Codex Alimentarius Commission has recently launched a searchable web-based version of the Codex General Standard for Food Additives (GSFA). This relatively new online database provides, in a searchable format, all the provisions for food additives that have been adopted by the Codex Alimentarius Commission. Provisions are searchable by food additive (name, synonym, INS number), by functional class, as defined in the Codex Class Names and the International Numbering System for Food Additives (CAC/GL 36-1989), and by food category, as described in Annex B of the Codex GSFA.
Additionally, this United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and World Health Organization (WHO) site includes summaries and conclusions of recent Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) meetings and other relevant information, such as call for data for future meetings, are available on the FAO website and the WHO website.
JECFA is an international scientific expert commit that is administered jointly by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the World Health Organization. It has been meeting since 1956. initially to evaluate the safety of food additives. Its work now also includes the evaluation of contaminants, naturally occurring toxicants and residues of veterinary drugs in foods.
The GSFA Online can assist regulatory authorities, consumers and the food industry itself to get the latest up-to date information on Codex food additives provisions. The Codex General Standard for Food Additives sets forth the conditions under which food additives may be used in different food products. “GSFA Online” allows users to search the Standard by food additive, such as name or synonym, by functional class of additives, and by food category.
It provides up-to-date information on the food additives provisions contained in the Codex GSFA to all users, including regulatory authorities, consumers and industry.
And, while the GSFA web site continues to be under development, it promises to be regularly updated to include additional food additive provisions adopted by the Codex Alimentarius Commission.
“GSFA Online” is available in English, French and Spanish. In addition, a CD-ROM version of “GSFA Online” will soon be available for those who may not always have easy access to the Internet. It will provide the same functionality and content as the online version. The website can be accessed using a standard web browser at http://www.codexalimentarius.net/gsfaonline.
